Welcome to fsugis.org.
Promoting Literacy in Geographic Information Science
through exploration of ideas, software, and the GIScience community.

This webpage has been created by Lisa Jordan, Assistant Professor in Geography at Florida State University, for Spring courses in GIS - Geographic Information Processes and Information and Social Applications of GIS.

Why study GIS?

In the information age, it is absolutely essential to understand what is involved in generating and producing geovisual information.  The need for critical thinking now goes beyond careful analysis of speech, text, and video representations.  We must to learn to evaluate the information frequently presented to us that is referenced to the Earth's surface.

What are the Social Applications of GIS?

The social applications of GIS are numerous.  Through FSU courses we will examine how all branches of social research - including economics, political science, sociology, history, public health, and geography can benefit by more sophisticated representation and analysis provided through Geographic Information Systems.
